When a Fort Worth Police officer shot and killed Atatiana Jefferson some years ago, the community came together to support her family. On Friday, they returned to the family’s side for Amber Carr, Jefferson’s sister, to be laid to rest.
A sizable crowd gathered at Friendship West Baptist Church for Carr’s funeral and a memorial ceremony honoring his life.
A fun-loving, stylish woman, Carr, 33, was characterized. Zion and Zayden, her two little sons, were born to her. When Zion’s aunt Jefferson was shot and killed inside the house, he was just 8 years old.
“She fought all the way to the end,” Minister Dominique Alexander told guests as he officiated the service.
Carr fought for her sister’s justice throughout the course of the last three years. She also supported other families who had lost loved ones to senseless violence and police-involved violence during that time, mentoring young ladies and speaking out for them.
“Amber was integral in contributing to developing, equipping, empowering, and mentoring our young, female future leaders,” one guest told the group.
While the cop who shot Atatiana was on trial, Carr was admitted to the hospital and given a congenital heart failure diagnosis. She lived to witness a jury find her sister’s attacker guilty and give him a sentence. On January 30, 2023, Carr died away quietly, according to family members.
The burial ceremony was attended by many pastors from North Texas, civil rights advocates, Fort Worth City Council members, state legislators, and relatives of people slain by police.
“When Atatiana lost her life, the family is experiencing that loss over and over again. The state of Texas can do better. And I know with your advocacy, we will do better,” said Rep. Carl Sherman of the Texas House of Representatives.
Carr’s sons and other family members were present for her final days in the hospital in January. The young mother treasured her sons dearly. The kids will now be looked after by her elder sister Ashley Carr.
“I pray I bring a smile to your face as I watch over Zion and Zayden,” Ashley Carr shared during a message of tribute to her sister.
