
Following a shooting incident in a church parking lot in Jones County, Mississippi on Sunday night, one man is in the hospital and an investigation is ongoing.
The gunshot was reported at 6:55 p.m. in the parking lot of the Rock Church on Highway 15 South close to the intersection of Lower Myrick Road, according to the Jones County Sheriff’s Department.
When emergency crews arrived, church members were reportedly providing care to an injured man.
The man was taken to South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel by EMServ for medical attention. According to reports, a church service was in progress when the incident took place.
Before the shooting, a church security team member allegedly approached the man, which led to a confrontation, according to sheriff Joe Berlin. A shot was fired as the guy allegedly grabbed for the security guard’s gun, striking him in the upper torso, according to reports.
There is no current threat, according to the sheriff’s office, and the area has been secured.
