Roxbury bad boy Bobby Brown and New Jersey sweetheart Whitney Houston were one of the most notorious couples in R&B history. The pair had their fair shares of highs and tragically public lows, but despite their tumultous foundation, they loved each other, started a family and thrived in their respective careers.

However, it seems that the story the public has pieced together, and relatively witnessed firsthand, would’ve went completely different had Bobby taken the advice of soulful legend, Teddy Riley.

  1. THE BLACKSTREET CROONER SAT WITH THE BREAKFAST CLUB AND SHED LIGHT ON HIS HISTORY WITH THE FORMER NEW EDITION MEMBER.Referencing BET’s original miniseries, The Bobby Brown StoryCharlamagne Tha God stated Riley’s character seemed “genuinely shocked seeing Bobby and Whitney on a date together” and asked if that actually happened. The iconic producer admits that “he was the one who tried to talk Bobby out of the wedding. Riley reflected on that day in 1992, “I told him, ‘man, you want me to work on this second album, and you’re gonna get married?”
  2. ACCORDING TO RILEY, BOBBY THOUGHT “IT WAS THE BEST THING FOR HIM.”Though not harboring any ill feelings against the late soulstress, he wanted Bobby to think about his career. As a famed sex symbol with a solid audience of single women, Riley assumed that getting married would tarnish his brand and decrease album sales, just like Lionel Richie and Babyface after their marriages. As seen in the movie, it was actually Riley’s then-girlfriend and Bobby’s current wife, Alicia Etheredge who talked Bobby out of his cold feet.Angela Yee asked Riley, in spite of giving that advice to Bobby, if he would ever get married and he curtly says it may never be in the cards for him, according to God.
  3. “GOD’S PLAN FOR ME IS FOCUS,” HE SAYS, ALLUDING THAT MARRIAGE MAY BE A DISTRACTION AND DENOUNCES RUMORS SAYING HE’S ANYTHING BUT SINGLE.
