In an interview with BBC at Wimbledon, the 23-time Grand Slam champ said she doesn’t talk about motherhood with new mom Markle because there’s already so much going on in the first few months.
“I never pass on words of wisdom because I feel like, everyone, when they have a kid, especially when you just have a baby, it’s so difficult to just be,” Williams said. “It’s just like get through the first three, four months and then we can talk.”
Williams also opened up about how motherhood has changed her perspective on a lot of things.
“I want to leave a legacy, I want to be this positive person for my daughter,” the mom said. “Everything I do, I want to do it for my daughter and I’ve never obviously had that motivation before.”
Being a mom and a tennis champion isn’t easy, but Williams appears to have it altogether… or so we thought.
“You seem to have the parenting thing totally down,” the interviewer said.
“I totally do not,” Williams said. “I’m a mess.”
The mom also discussed how she was trying to change the way women were perceived in the media especially now that she has a daughter to think about.
“For me, it’s really important to believe in yourself and it’s hard. I can’t imagine growing up nowadays in this time, but I have to imagine because I have a daughter that’s going to grow up in this time so I kind of need to put myself in that situation,” Williams said. “I do have a voice that I can use and how do I use that in a positive way?”
Williams welcomed her first child with Alexis Ohanian, daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., on Sep. 1, 2017.
