A hardline Islamic leader who protested against the publication of Playboy magazine in Indonesia has been named as a suspect in a pornography case.

Police want to question Rizieq Shihab, the head of the Islamic Defenders’ Front (FPI), about claims that he exchanged sexually explicit text messages and pictures with a woman. He is believed to be on a pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

Argo Yuwono, a police spokesman, said that they were investigating whether the cleric had participated in and transmitted pornographic content.

If convicted Mr Rizieq would face a prison term of up to five years. The woman who received the messages has also been named as a suspect.

Mr Rizieq is the subject of a separate investigation into alleged defamation.
