A singing minister from Birmingham has a chart-topping hit album.
The Rev. Mike McClure Jr., pastor of the Rock City Church based in Forestdale, hit No. 1 on Billboard’s gospel album chart for the week of Oct. 26-Nov. 1 with his 13-song album, “Live Free.”
It features the single “Big,” which rose to No. 7 on Billboard’s gospel digital song sales chart in August. The album was released on Sept. 20 by Blacksmoke Music.
The recordings bill the artist as “Pastor Mike Jr.”
McClure, a 2001 graduate of Minor High School, is the son of the Rev. Michael D. McClure Sr., pastor of Revelation Church Ministries in Irondale. The elder McClure, a former Bessemer police officer, ordained his son at Revelation Church and appointed him as ”movement pastor” for two years before he left to start a campus ministry at Miles College.
McClure started the Rock Church with worship services at Miles College and then in 2010 the congregation bought a 12-acre former Christian school campus at 1120 Apricot Avenue. The congregation grew quickly to more than 2,000 members. It has added a branch campus in the Central Park area of Birmingham.
In December, McClure joined with Hunter Street Baptist Church Pastor Buddy Gray to form “Pastors4People” to heal divisions in the wake of the police shooting that killed a black man at the Riverchase Galleria mall on Thanksgiving night in 2018.
