COVID-19 has killed more than one in every 1,000 Americans, data shows.
With a population of 328 million, the US has recorded at least 331,000 virus-related deaths, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University.
Meanwhile, December has become the deadliest month since the start of the pandemic — with more than 63,000 Americans killed by the virus in the past 26 days, CNN reported.
By comparison, the nation recorded 36,964 deaths in the entire previous month.

Experts have warned that another 193,000 Americans could die from the virus over the next two months as the health crisis continues to accelerate, CNN reported.
“The projections are just nightmarish,” Dr. Peter Hotez, an infectious disease specialist at the Baylor College of Medicine, told the outlet.
“People can still save the lives of their loved ones by practicing that social distancing and masks. And remember, vaccines are around the corner.”
To date, there have been at least 18.5 million cases detected in the US since the pandemic began, data shows.
