A white van was heading northbound on the service road when a Chrysler and another van headed westbound on Airline ran a red light, striking the first van, police said.

A man in the front passenger seat of the first van, which had the right of way, died at the scene, said Sgt. Griffiths of the Houston Police Department. Three others in that van were taken to the hospital, as well as three more people from the other two vehicles.

The vehicles were fairly damaged after the crash.

“There had to be some speed to cause that kind of damage,” said Lt. Larry Crowson of the Houston Police Department.

The cars that ran the red light could have been involved in a bout of road rage at the time of the wreck, police said, without elaborating.  Those drivers appeared to be intoxicated, Griffiths said.

The first van, which doesn’t initially appear to be at fault, was headed to work, she said.
