DeKalb County School District officials said Monday they are still working to determine what happened in an incident where about a dozen middle school students apparently injured themselves in self-mutilation incidents.

Vasanne Tinsley, the district’s deputy superintendent for student support and intervention, said during Monday’s DeKalb County Board of Education meeting that officials were still unclear on when the incidents involving 11 Freedom Middle School students took place.

“It may have occurred prior to school and not at school,” she said.

Regardless, the district has provided resources — including social workers, counselors and other service providers — to students and their families, adding the alleged number of students affected was unusual in nature.

No student suffered life-threatening injuries, officials said.
