A report from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office revealed new information in the near drowning of a toddler Thursday. The report states a resident saw a 1-year-old girl in a pond behind Building 2 of the Madelyn Oaks Apartments off Lenox Avenue and called the police. Another witness reported they saw another child in the pond struggling to swim.
A 14-year-old told police she was watching the two children for her sister. She said she fed the little girl Thursday morning and put her back to bed. According to the report, the aunt said she went to sleep and when she woke, the girl was missing.
The report said the teen called her sister when she couldn’t find the 1-year-old girl. The child’s mom arrived, and witnesses told police they heard her yelling “my baby, my baby is in the pond.” One of the witnesses also said they saw a second child outside the pond.
A neighbor helped an officer at the scene pull the child out of the water and perform CPR. JSO said on Thursday the child was in “very critical condition” at Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital.
News4JAX called the hospital on Friday and learned the child is still in critical condition.
JSO and the Department of Children and Families are investigating.
