Pastor Devon Adams spent two decades building his church in West Jackson and working to to break down racial barriers.

“Pastor Devon Adams was an awesome man of God, and he was a pillar in this community,” church member Charles Alexander said.
The pastor’s family said he passed away Thursday night of COVID-19.
“We loved him tremendously,” Alexander said.
According to church members, the 61-year-old founder and pastor of Word of Christ Ministry spent the past two and a half weeks in the hospital battling COVID-19.
“He did a lot of great missions, a lot of great work,” Alexander said. “This community is going to miss him because he did a lot. We did a lot of tent revivals. We did food drives every other week.”
In his Father’s Day message to the congregation, Adams called on fathers to model good behavior for their children.
Alexander said Adams was also committed to working across denominational and racial lines.
“All he saw was Christ and just getting souls delivered and set free. That’s what he loved. He loved people,” Alexander said.
The church is holding a food drive Saturday morning, even as they mourn their pastor and leader.
