Melania Trump on Wednesday hit back at critics of her White House Christmas decorations — including the 40 blood-red trees that have been mocked for looking like the backdrop of a horror movie.
“We are in the 21st century and everybody has a different taste,” the first lady said during a panel at Liberty University. “I think they look fantastic.”
The crimson trees lining the East Colonnade were lampooned on Twitter when they were unveiled Monday along with the rest of the White House’s Christmas decorations.
“Welcome to Christmas at the House of Horrors,” wrote @ellievan65.
Added @plucas1000: “This is the white house christmas decorations of 2018, and those blood-red trees look literally like out of a horror movie.”
Some people thought the trees looked sinister, comparing them to the infamous scene in the 1980 film “The Shining”where a river of blood spurts out of an elevator and into a hallway.
Others digitally altered an image of the topiary trees to add white bonnets, inspired by outfits on the dystopian Hulu show “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
And one person though the brightly colored seasonal shrubbery looked more like Muppets.
“This year’s White House Christmas decor = Dead yip-yip aliens from Sesame Street,” tweeted @HubertVigilla.
But the first lady invited all the haters to come check out the decorations in person.
“I hope everybody will come over and visit it,” she said. “In real life, they look even more beautiful.”
