Kim Kardashian’s star power is almost unparalleled. In Hollywood and beyond, few people have the same amount of influence as she and her family do – and now, she’s looking to embark on an entirely new career. Kim, who appears on the cover of this week’s Vogue, is studying to become a lawyer. She told the magazine she’s doing a four-year apprenticeship at a San Francisco firm and plans to take the bar exam in 2022.
“I had to think long and hard about this,” Kim told Vogue about her huge decision. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star, who is married to Kanye West, says it was spurred by her advocacy for Alice Marie Johnson, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment for drug trafficking in 1996. Kim and Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, met with Donald to advocate for Alice’s release in 2018. Trump commuted Alice’s sentence, since she had exhibited good behaviour in prison and was being incarcerated for a non-violent offence.
Last year I registered with the California State Bar to study law. For the next 4 years, a minimum of 18 hours a week is required, I will take written and multiple choice tests monthly. As my first year is almost coming to an end I am preparing for the baby bar, a mini version of the bar, which is required when studying law this way. I’ve seen some comments from people who are saying it’s my privilege or my money that got me here, but that’s not the case. One person actually said I should “stay in my lane.” I want people to understand that there is nothing that should limit your pursuit of your dreams, and the accomplishment of new goals. You can create your own lanes, just as I am. The state bar doesn’t care who you are. This option is available to anyone who’s state allows it. It’s true I did not finish college. You need 60 college credits (I had 75) to take part in “reading the law”, which is an in office law school being apprenticed by lawyers. For anyone assuming this is the easy way out, it’s not. My weekends are spent away from my kids while I read and study. I work all day, put my kids to bed and spend my nights studying. There are times I feel overwhelmed and when I feel like I can’t do it but I get the pep talks I need from the people around me supporting me. I changed my number last year and disconnected from everyone because I have made this strict commitment to follow a dream of mine – It’s never too late to follow your dreams. I want to thank Van Jones for believing in me and introducing me to Jessica Jackson. Jessica along with Erin Haney have taken on the role of my mentors and I am forever grateful to them both putting in so much time with me, believing in me and supporting me through this journey. This week I have a big torts essay due on negligence. Wish me luck ✨⚖️
“The White House called me to advise to help change the system of clemency, and I’m sitting in the Roosevelt Room with, like, a judge who had sentenced criminals and a lot of really powerful people and I just sat there, like… I need to know more.”
Kim told Vogue the experience taught her a lot, as did the work she had been doing before visiting the White House. She said she’d been working on prison reform issues for several months prior to meeting with Donald. “I just felt like I wanted to be able to fight for people who have paid their dues to society,” she continued.
Kris Jenner, Kim’s mother, told Vogue she found the change unexpected and said it surprised her. But the magazine also points out the late Robert Kardashian, Kim’s father, was a lawyer who became famous when he defended O.J. Simpson. “When you find something that you’re passionate about, it’s not difficult; you don’t have to think about it – it just happens,” Kris toldVogue.
As for Kim, she said she’s not worried about people who might react to her news with negativity, and says she’s ready to show people what she can do and the even bigger difference she can make. “I love to be put in a situation where I can have a conversation with someone who might not be inclined to think much of me, because I can guarantee they will have a different opinion and understand what’s important to me after they’ve met me,” she said.
