At Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmys, Katt Williams has won his category for Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Donald Glover’s uncle Willie in the FX show Atlanta. The Emmy is both Williams’ first win and nomination.
Katt plays Earn’s crazy uncle, who’s called the “Alligator Man” because he owns a pet alligator for some inexplicable reason. Williams even interned at an alligator farm to prepare for the role.
“The first two times I auditioned, I wasn’t good enough and other people were better,” Williams told Complex. “I just kept at it, and then I interned at an alligator farm for three-and-a-half weeks, just so I could get comfortable enough that we didn’t use a stuntman. I really adopted the alligator into my home. And became so comfortable with it that it was like working with another co-star.”
For his win, Williams trounced Bryan Cranston (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Sterling K. Brown (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Glover (Saturday Night Live), and Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live).
Tiffany Haddish also snagged her first Emmy for Nov. 11’s Saturday Night Live episode, where she made history for being the first black female stand-up comedian to guest host. This Is Us‘ Ron Cephas Jones and The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Samira Wiley also won guest actor honors in drama, completing an African-American sweep of the guest actor categories.
