A Michigan father’s jaw dropped in court this week as he was told he could spend the rest of his life behind bars for the starvation death of his 10-month-old daughter.

An autopsy found that Mary Anne Welch was severely neglected, and parents Seth Welch and Tatiana Fusari were both charged with murder and child abuse.

Investigators say that Welch and Fusari knew about their daughter’s failing health but did not seek medical help due to their religious beliefs and their mistrust in doctors.

The couple was arrested on Friday, one day after Seth Welch woke up in their Solon Township home and found the baby unresponsive in her crib.
