Police say the body of a young woman has been found near a fishing pier in the Detroit River.
Multiple agencies and dive teams from the Detroit Police Department and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office searched the water over the weekend, but could not locate a 26-year-old woman — who went missing in the river near Belle Isle Saturday afternoon.
Witnesses said victim, identified as Destani Smith of Southfield, was with friends when she jumped into the water to swim and didn’t resurface.
Updating WWJ Newsradio 950 on the case Monday afternoon, a police source said officers with the Detroit Police Underwater Recovery team found the body at around 12 p.m.
As an investigation continues, the Wayne County Medical Examiner has taken custody of the body and will make an official identification.
