A deranged straphanger slugged another subway rider in the face with a metal pipe, fracturing his skull, after the two got into a fight on a train in Lower Manhattan, cops said Sunday.
The victim, a 59-year-old man, was on a southbound No. 2 train at Chambers Street at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday when he got into an argument with the suspect.
The argument escalated, and police said the suspect pulled a metal pipe out and whacked the man in the face with it, fracturing his skull and breaking his eye socket.
It was not immediately clear what the two men were arguing about, police said.
The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition, authorities said.
The suspect ran off the train at Chambers Street and has not been caught.
