Had things gone a little differently in Super Bowl LII, the New England Patriots would have been the ones visiting the White House earlier this month — and perhaps there wouldn’t have been any controversy over a withdrawn invitation from President Donald Trump.

Unlike the Philadelphia Eagles, the Patriots didn’t have any outspoken players who openly criticized the president or the NFL’s national anthem policy.

However, more than a dozen Patriots did kneel during the anthem before a Week 3 game against the Houston Texans. And several others, including quarterback Tom Brady, locked arms.

In an interview this week with Oprah Winfrey, Brady described how the team chose to react to the controversy. He said several good conversations were borne from how some players chose to protest social injustice.

“We support what people are going through,” Brady said. “I’ve been playing sports long enough. Everyone comes from something different. And I think showing respect for everybody is — you know, in a locker room with a team of guys trying to go in the same direction, you better have that empathy for everybody.”
