More than two years after receiving reports of alleged malpractice at Dr. Windell Davis-Boutte’s cosmetic surgery practice, the Georgia Composite Medical Board today immediately suspended the Gwinnett physician’s license.

Citing the case of a woman who underwent surgery last week, the board order says that Davis-Boutte’s treatment of the patient failed to meet the minimal standards of care. That is a part of a pattern of conduct, the order also says.

Its order also cites several cases previously reported in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Channel 2 Action News report last month, including one where a patient suffered permanent brain damage. Several former patients have filed lawsuits. Evidence in one included videos Davis-Boutte posted showing her dancing while doing surgery.

The recent case cited in the board’s order involved a woman who was undergoing liposuction, breast augmentation and a Brazlilian Butt lift conducted by Davis-Boutte on May 30. She was later taken by ambulance to a hospital emergency room because of respiratory distress and bleeding from the liposuction incisions. She was found to have a collapsed lung and was suffering from anemia due to acute blood loss. As of yesterday, the patient was still in the hospital, according to the order.

Susan Witt, an attorney who has represented several women in malpractice lawsuits against Davis-Boutte, said it’s about time the board took action in what she described as an egregious case of malpractice that harmed scores of patients.

“It is long overdue,” Witt said. “Many women have been harmed unnecessarily by the board’s procrastination.”
