• Meghan Markle’s father has recently announced that he will not be attending the royal wedding.
• Thomas Markle was originally due to walk his daughter down the aisle.
• During a guest co-hosting stint on “The Today Show,” John Cena seemed prepared to step in as the bride-to-be’s unlikely hero.
• “I can hop on a plane. I can get there in a few days,” he said.
Meghan Markle’s family hasn’t stopped making waves since she announced her engagement to Prince Harry, but it seems that her relatives saved their most dramatic plot twists for the final stretch. Most notably, with the royal wedding mere days away, Markle’s father has suffered multiple medical scares, weathered a paparazzi scandal, and dropped out of the wedding — twice.
John Cena — a celebrity whose name few of us would expect to be included in the same breath as a future royal’s — has also been experiencing tough times. He recently had the “worst day ever” after his fiancée, Nikki Bella, ended their engagement.
Perhaps misery truly does love company, or maybe Cena fancies himself an unlikely hero. But the “Blockers” actor has decided to offer himself up to walk Markle down the aisle if her father doesn’t show.
During a guest co-hosting stint on “The Today Show,” Kathie Lee Gifford proclaimed that nobody would be better than Cena to give Markle away at the altar.
“I can hop on a plane. I can get there in a few days,” Cena responded.
NBC’s royal correspondent, Keir Simmons, also asked John if he’d be willing “to intervene” in the royal wedding drama.
“It seems like there is some drama that is in need of a special guest referee,” Cena said.
In a third interview with the celebrity gossip site TMZ, Thomas Markle said he would have to miss his daughter’s historic wedding because he had unavoidable heart surgery that would stop him traveling. He had previously told TMZ that his decision to drop out of the wedding was born of embarrassment that photographs of him in British tabloids were discovered to have been staged for money.
As the ceremony grows closer and the drama intensifies, it will be interesting to see who steps in to support Markle on her big day. Fingers crossed that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson throws his hat in the ring, too.
