Shaquille O’Neal learned the hard way that he can’t charge $70,000 to his American Express card without suspicion.
“I have the biggest purchase in Walmart history — $70,000,” O’Neal, 46, confessed on “The Late Late Show with James Corden” Thursday night.
Corden, 39, and Victoria Beckham, the night’s other guest, were flummoxed by both the location of the purchase and the rejection of O’Neal’s credit card.
The ordeal began when O’Neal arrived to his empty new apartment in Phoenix after being traded by Miami.
“So two or three in the morning I got to go get four or five TVs,” O’Neal explained. “I’ve got to go get printers. I’ve got to go get laptops. I’ve got to go get appliances, sheets, towels, underwear, T-shirts. So at the end, it was $70,000.”
After not one, but two denials at check out — “I know I’m not broke,” O’Neal admitted to thinking at the time — he gave up and decided to come back later.
“So then the American Express security called me [and said] ‘Hey man. Somebody stole your credit card and they spent $70,000 at Walmart,’” O’Neal revealed.
O’Neal confirmed with the perplexed caller that he was the one trying to make a purchase. Eventually, he was able to purchase the items.
“That’s a true story,” O’Neal assured the audience.
