The Santa Clara County (Calif.) District Attorney’s Office announced in a press release Thursday that San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster has been charged with felony domestic violence stemming from a February incident.

Foster was arrested Feb. 11 on suspicion of domestic violence, making criminal threats and possession of an assault weapon after officers responded to his home in Los Gatos, Calif. The district attorney’s office said Thursday that the incident in question involved Foster’s live-in girlfriend, who was left “bruised and with a ruptured ear drum.”

The 24-year-old linebacker is also charged with felony counts of forcefully attempting to prevent a victim from reporting a crime and possession of an assault weapon, as well as misdemeanor possession of a large capacity weapon magazine, according to the release.

Foster is scheduled to be arraigned in a San Jose court Thursday afternoon, the district attorney’s office said.

“Our focus is on holding accountable those who hurt their intimate partners,” deputy district attorney Kevin Smith said in a statement. “Our Office handles between four and five thousand domestic violence cases each year. We only hope that this case illuminates the tragic regularity of the rest.”

Spokespeople for the NFL and the 49ers did not immediately reply to requests for comment from USA TODAY Sports.
