Bill Hader’s Stefon returns to ‘Saturday Night Live’

Stefon returns to 'SNL' and we are blessed

There’s a new club on Saturday Night Live that everyone’s trying to get into, and it’s STEFON.

OK, maybe not the best way to phrase that, but Bill Hader’s hosting gig on SNL gave us the greatest moment of all: the return of Stefon. Stefon, a flamboyant gift from the comedy gods, is the Weekend Update character originated by Hader. And this week, he returned to the Update desk to give tourists some tips on where to go on St. Patrick’s Day.

Among his ridiculous suggestions, he offers places for people who are “drunk in Midtown, doing coke off your laundry cart.” His return is a bit bittersweet, as Hader’s departure saw him marry old Update anchor Seth Meyers, who has since left the show.

Much of Stefon’s dialogue was added at the last minute, which meant seeing the text for the first time as it rolled on the teleprompter. Hader, known for consistently breaking character behind Stefon’s hands, stayed true to form: “If you’re Irish, or just white and violent, New York’s hottest Irish club is “OFF THE CHURCH MOTHER. This place has everything: Peeps, TED Talks, Roman J. Israel, Esq. Be sure and hit the dance floor with Farrahcons, which are leprechauns that look like Farrah Fawcett.”

Stefon consulted his lawyer about the term “midget,” because this is a new time in America, y’all. “By the way, the correct term is ‘little people.’ ” Stefon’s lawyer, Shy, was played by the particularly important John Mulaney, co-originator of the character.

Here’s to hoping that in another world, Seth and Stefon are still happily married with as many “little people” visitors as they can handle.
