BUFORD, GA — Gwinnett County Police say they have identified a burglary suspect who broke into a Buford church and stole a church van. On the evening of Jan. 16, a suspect was captured on surveillance footage breaking into the Salt and Light Church at 4300 South Lee Street in Buford.
The day after the original media release was published, Jan. 27, the stolen church van was found with heavy fire damage in Hall County.
The lead investigator began to receive tips about the possible identity of the suspect in the surveillance videos. One of the tipsters identified the suspect as Shannon Beauford, 23, of Gainesville. As of yesterday, Beauford was incarcerated at the Hall County Jail. The detective assigned to the case traveled to the Hall County Jail and met with Beauford. Following the interview, the detective secured several warrants.
Beauford has active warrants for the following: burglary, theft by taking motor vehicle, vandalism to a place of worship, and possession of tools for the commission of a crime. The detective learned that Beauford was previously involved in another case the night before the burglary. Because of that incident, he is also facing an obstruction of a law enforcement officer warrant.
Charges in reference to the vehicle fire will be decided by the Hall County Sheriff’s Department. Beauford will remain at the Hall County Jail until his transfer is authorized.
“We’d like to extend our appreciation to the people who help us solve so many criminal cases such as this one,” said Cpl. Michele Pihera, Gwinnett Police Department. “Without their helpful information, criminals would have more opportunities to victimize others.”
