Do you guys remember Jazzy Rowe? The University of Hartford student who was harassed by her roommate Brianna Brochu? Well if not, here’s a refresher. Last month, Rowe went on Facebook Live, and accused Brochure of smearing bodily fluid on her belongings and sticking her toothbrush ‘‘where the sun doesn’t shine”, and even spit in her coconut oil. Jazzy actually got sick from all of these actions and the incidents caused national outrage.
With the help of the NAACP, Jazzy Rowe was able to file charges against Brochu. Rowe, who is Black, felt that her roommates repulsive acts were racially motivated and requested that the girl be charged with felony hate crime. However, despite all of the evidence mounted against her including a Facebook status in which Brochu admits to the all the acts she’s accused of, she won’t face any hate crime charges.
The former student plead “not guilty” to charges of breach of peace and criminal mischief yesterday and prosecutors decided not to charge her with anything new.
The president of the NAACP, Scot X. Esdaile expressed his disappointment with the outcome in a statement saying, “We are very very disappointed with the prosectors … not pressing this case hard enough. They are not making this an urgent matter from where we sit.” He added, “We expect [the prosecutors] to fight on behalf of the people of our community. This is a hate crime. Let’s stop playing games. Let’s stop pushing this away.”
Prosecutors are still investigating and the case will follow through until January 29th.
