According to USA Today, the Department of Veteran Affairs has repeatedly hired healthcare workers with troubled pasts. This group of hires include Neurosurgeon John Henry Schneider who racked up more than a dozen malpractice claims and settlements in both Wyoming and Iowa. Schneider was accused of allegedly making surgical mistakes that left patients maimed, paralyzed or dead.

VA also hired a psychiatrist who was accused of sexual misconduct and a psychologist with felony convictions. They ended up firing him the psychologist after they determined he was a “direct threat to others” and the VA’s mission.

As a result of USA TODAY’s investigation of Schneider, VA officials determined his hiring was illegal.
