ATLANTA – The Burgess family has much more to be thankful for this Thanksgiving as their toddler in dire need of a new kidney will be receiving a new on this week.
Originally, A.J. “Baby A.J.” Burgess, 2, was supposed to receive his father’s kidney. The two were a match and they had been approved for the transplant in early October. A parole violation and subsequent arrest, however, put the procedure on hold and Emory University Hospital requested proof of Dickerson’s compliance with the terms of his probation for three months before he could be reconsidered.
While talks were continuing between the family and the hospital, A.J. was admitted to the hospital after contracting pneumonia and a potentially deadly infection called peritonitis and underwent surgery to implant a new port for his dialysis treatments, as well as blood transfusions. He was released Nov. 8 and doctors said he should be healthy enough for a transplant within two weeks.
FOX 5 News learned late Tuesday the family will now be getting a kidney from an anonymous organ donor.
Young A.J. must endure nightly dialysis to survive.
