Aly Raisman, a member of the 2016 United States Olympic gymnastics team has accused Larry Nassar, a doctor for for the USA Gymnastics women’s team of sexual misconduct and abuse. Just weeks after her teammate McKayla Maroney came forward, Aly sat down with 60 minutes and told her abuse story for the first time, revealing disturbing details about the doctor.
Larry Nassar, who has been accused by more than 140 women of sexual assault is scheduled to plead guilty to two of the cases in his ongoing trial. When the news first broke, several of Raisman’s teammates spoke out, including Simone Biles and Gabby Douglass, although their responses were very different. In a tweet that has since been deleted, Douglas wrote, “however it is our responsibility as women to dress modestly and be classy. dressing in a provocative/sexual way entices the wrong crowd.”
Her reaction provoked enrages responses from many including her own teammate, Simone Biles. In response to Gabbies tweet, Biles replied “shocks me that I’m seeing this but it doesn’t surprise me…” she tweeted. “honestly seeing this brings me to tears bc as your teammate I expected more from you & to support her. I support you Aly 💕 & all the other women out there!
Amidst the swift backlash, Gabby issued an apology on twitter stating “i didn’t correctly word my reply & i am deeply sorry for coming off like i don’t stand alongside my teammates. regardless of what you wear, abuse under any circumstance is never acceptable. i am WITH you. #metoo”
