Shinmoedake volcano’s eruption is believed to have been sparked after the Japanese Meteorological Agency observed 100 volcanic earthquakes per day since the beginning of October.
Several volcanic tremors, caused by the movement of magma and hot water underground, had also been observed near Shinmoedak, on the Japanese island of Kyushu
The agency had raised the eruption warning earlier this month.
Shinmoedake last erupted six years ago in January 2011 and sparked a Level 3 warning urging evacuation preparations.
