Chris Weaver’s “Try A Little Tenderness” had the judges scrambling for the button. On the season debut of The Voice, viewers saw Chris Weaver offer a stunning version of “Try A Little Tenderness” that had Jennifer Hudson, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Miley Cyrus, in a frenzy over who would become his coach.
Raised in Des Moines and now living in New York, Weaver grew up singing in his family’s Pentecostal church but never felt like he could be himself—until he discovered drag. Today, he leads worship services by day and, by night, sings (usually live) as the sultry Nedra Belle. And her drag mother is none other than RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Sasha Belle.

“Drag is an opportunity, a way to reach people,” he tells NBC News. “People want this relationship with Christ. But they don’t feel there’s a place they can go and do that. Maybe my shows help do that.”

The 29-year-old says he auditioned for The Voice for a change of pace, but he had a special connection to Hudson: He once sang for her at a party for Broadway’s The Color Purple.During his Voice audition, she threw a shoe at him—the ultimate compliment in the black church.

“Yes, you came from the church, but God gave you that voice to sing far and beyond,” the Oscar winner gushed.

Obviously Weaver chose #TeamJHud.
