Janet Jackson’s now-crumbled union to magnate Wissam Al Mana wasn’t the picture of wedded bliss, according to Jackson’s brother, Steven Randall “Randy” Jackson.
Randy, 55, tells People magazine in an interview published Tuesday that, “Janet’s been through a lot with her divorce.”
Jackson and Al Mana, who is from Qatar, tied the knot in 2012 and welcomed a son, Eissa Al Mana in January. Jackson, 51, confirmed she and the 42-year-old businessman were splitting in a video shared to Twitter in May. “We are in court,” she elaborated. “And the rest is in God’s hands.”
Randy describes the marriage as “quite an abusive situation.”
“It came on later in the relationship, verbal abuse and being (made to feel like) a prisoner in her own home.” he claims. “No pregnant woman needs to go through being called a (expletive) every day.”
Lawyers for Al Mana issued a statement to People, saying he “is not going to dignify these particular and deeply hurtful allegations with a response.”
“The breakdown of his marriage to Janet Jackson is a cause of great sadness to Mr. Al Mana, and it is the wellbeing and privacy of their son, Eissa, that remains his sole focus,” the statement continued.
As Randy tells it, Al Mana did not physically abuse his sister. Still, he insists he wasn’t “going to allow (Jackson) to live in that abusive situation.”
Commenting on her performance Saturday in Houston, during which People reports “she was overcome with emotion,” Randy says that “was her situation coming out, what she’s been going through.” He continued, “The abuse is still going on.”
“She has custody and (Al Mana), of course, allowed her to bring the baby on tour,” Randy adds, “but it’s constant harassment. This tour almost didn’t happen, but by the grace of God we’re here and we’re very prayerful.”
Jackson’s rep, Paula Witt, declined USA TODAY’s request for further comment. Representatives for Al Mana did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.
