A man shot by police while allegedly driving toward officers on the Bay Bridge early Sunday is in stable condition at an Oakland hospital, a California Highway Patrol spokesperson said.
The man allegedly drove his red Cadillac toward officers investigating a traffic collision on the shoulder of the Bay Bridge around 3:45 a.m., CHP spokesperson Vu Williams said. One officer “felt threatened” and fired several rounds at the driver after ordering him to stop the car, according to the agency.
The shooting snarled traffic out of San Francisco for hours as CHP investigated the shooting about a mile west of the Toll Plaza and gradually opened eastbound lanes to traffic.
The driver, an adult male whose name will not be released unless he is booked into jail on suspicion of charges, was struck at least once. Williams said he is being treated at Highland Hospital in Oakland.
“We will at the very least file an assault with a deadly weapon charge,” Williams said. “I’m not sure if they’re looking at any other charges.”
Other passengers were in the car, but none were injured by gunfire.
Williams said the CHP initially detained the passengers for questioning, but they have since been released.
As for whether they may face charges, Williams said “it doesn’t look like there will be any.”
