BARROW COUNTY, Ga. – The search for a 11-year-old child believed to be underwater in a Barrow County pond resumed Friday morning, after crews halted search Thursday evening.
Officials say the boy was with his 9-year-old brother in a paddle boat. The older brother went underwater and did not come up. The missing boy was not wearing a floatation jacket and wasn’t supervised by adults, according to authorities.
Barrow County officials are looking in the pond located along Hancock Bridge Road. Authorities received a report of a child under water at the pond shortly before 6:30 p.m.
“School ended yesterday, and they went down there to celebrate with a little swim,” according to Scott Dakin from Barrow County Emergency Services. “And it unfortunately got bad.”
Dakin added search crews are also trying to comfort the boy’s distraught family.
The name of the child has not yet been released, and officials say that the boy had been underwater approximately 20 minutes by the time they could reach the scene.
