Wisconsin man was arrested Saturday after allegedly trying to kill his wife and himself by intentionally crashing their car into a tree, officials said

The Racine County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Sunday that deputies were dispatched around 10:45 p.m. on Saturday to an accident in the village of Rochester, located about 30 miles southwest of Milwaukee.

The operator of the vehicle, a 40-year-old woman, called 911 and said her husband grabbed the steering wheel and turned them off the road into a tree.

“Prior to grabbing the steering wheel, he had stated that he hoped she crashed and killed them both,” the sheriff’s office said on Facebook.

Deputies arrived and found the vehicle resting against the tree with “heavy front end damage” and airbags deployed. Police later arrested Justin D. Sampsel, 39, and took him to the Racine County Jail.

Sheriff’s officials plan to seek a charge of attempted first-degree intentional homicide against Sampsel.

Jeff Schimek, who lives near where the crash took place, told FOX6 the whole incident was “nuts.”

“If the guy tried to kill both him and his wife, it’s pretty obvious he wasn’t thinking right,” he told the television station. “People don’t want to die.”

Sampsel’s wife was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, the sheriff’s office said.
