A Texas police officer shot while responding to an incident at a Home Depot in Dallas died from his injuries Wednesday.
Mayor Mike Rawlings during a city council meeting announced Officer Rogelio Santander died at the hospital around 8 a.m. and ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in his honor.
Santander and a second officer, Crystal Almeida, responded to the Home Depot Tuesday after an off-duty officer there phoned in for backup officers to help remove a man from the store near off Forest Central Drive.
Almeida was also critically injured, and a civilian was shot during the violent confrontation.
Both officers, each with three years of experience on with the Dallas department, underwent surgeries for their injuries at Texas Health Presbyterian Dallas hospital.
Following a five-hour manhunt and a high-speed chase through downtown Dallas, authorities arrested suspected gunman 29-year-old Armand Juarez.
He faces multiple accounts of aggravated assault of a police officer.
