Hours after being abducted at gunpoint by her ex-boyfriend who fathered a child with her, a 20-year-old student at Ohio State University’s Mansfield campus was killed in Kentucky Monday when her captor engaged with a shootout with police after a brief car chase.

At this point, it is unclear who fired the bullet that killed Skylar Williams, the young mother who was taken from a parking lot on her college campus in front of fellow students, who reported the matter to police.

According to a statement from the Kentucky State Police, the chase took place at about 3:30 p.m. when police responded to a 911 call from a witness who claimed to have seen a woman being forced into a car at a gas station in Gallatin County.

Troopers caught up with the vehicle, following the car south on Interstate 71 into Oldham County, and continuing to do so as it exited at Highway 329, where it came to a stop on the ramp.

A Kentucky State Trooper reported hearing a gunshot coming from the car, and returned fire.

Williams was hit by at least one bullet, but investigators are still trying to determine if the fatal shot came from her abductor Ty’rell Pounds’ gun or the state trooper’s weapon.

Pounds, 24, was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by police gunfire.

Williams was transported to the University of Louisville Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Pounds and Williams had been in a relationship at one time. It was unclear when that relationship ended.

Pounds fathered Williams’ child, according to police.

“Our Ohio State community suffered a tragic loss with the death of Mansfield student Skylar Williams,” the university’s president, Michael Drake, said in a statement released Tuesday. “This senseless and shocking incident has left our campus shaken. We join Mansfield Dean Norman Jones in expressing our condolences and deepest sympathies. Our thoughts and prayers are with Skylar’s family.”
