A church deacon was killed Sunday evening in Selma, according to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.
According to James Perry, a pastor at White Oak Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 68-year-old Vondell Bethune, who served as a church deacon, was killed.
Authorities said the shooting happened around 6:45 p.m. at Bethune’s home at 7529 Buffalo Road. Bethune was found dead when officials arrived at the scene.
Alvin Harris, 50, of the same address, was charged with murder in the case, according to officials, and was being held in the Johnston County jail. A court date was scheduled for Monday.
According to Perry, Bethune served in the United States Army and “worked tirelessly helping those in need in whatever capacity he could.”
“Mr. Bethune will be dearly missed by all of us,” the pastor told WRAL News.
