On the hottest day of the year so far, police arrested a father accused of leaving his young boy in a car parked at a Walmart in McDonough.
Shoppers noticed the child sweating inside the car, which had its windows rolled up, Channel 2 Action News reported. They told employees to call 911, and McDonough police officers ended up shattering the window to rescue the child.
A witness provided cellphone video of the incident to Channel 2, which shows the Walmart employees caring for the boy after the rescue. The witness said the child looked to be about 2 years old.
The father was greeted by police around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday when he returned to the car with two other children, Channel 2 reported. The man was arrested, but neither his name nor the charges he faces were released.
Temperatures hit about 90 degrees in McDonough, and vehicles in the sun can get more than 30 degrees hotter than the temperature outside. The child left the scene in an ambulance, but witnesses said he appeared to be OK.
It’s unclear how long the child was in the car alone.
