Butterball Reportedly Recalls Grounds Turkey After People Are Sick With Salmonella

Shoppers who purchased Butterball, LCC raw ground turkey products this link opens in a new tab with a use or sell-by date of July 26, 2018 are being asked to dispose of the food item immediately, as it may be contaminated with Salmonella schwarzengrund.

The North Carolina-based poultry producer announced a recall of approximately 78,164 pounds of meat on Wednesday in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS)this link opens in a new tab.

They say the presence of Salmonella schwarzengrund was found in the products listed in the recall, and linked to five illnesses in two states — four in a single residential facility in Wisconsin and one illness in Minnesota.

Both cases were being investigated by the FSIS and public health partners, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, according to a release by the FSIS. A total of three intact Butterball brand ground turkey samples were collected from the residence where four of the case patients live.

Since the use or sell-by date of the recalled products is so long ago (the prepackaged raw ground turkey was produced on July 7, 2018), Butterball, LLC said on the company’s website that it’s “highly unlikely” any of the meat will be available in retail stores. However, the company urged consumers to check their freezers.

 

“Butterball is working closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and state health departments to encourage the public to identify any potential frozen product and to dispose of it appropriately,” they said.

Consumers with questions about the recall can call 1-800-288-8372 ext. 4 between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. ET.

According to the CDC, Salmonella is estimated to cause about 1.2 million illnesses, 450 deaths, and 23,000 hospitalizations in the U.S. each year.

“Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses,” the CDC said. “The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment. In some persons, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact their health care provider.”

Stressed Butterball: “Bacteria, including Salmonella, are naturally present in the environment and as a result, raw poultry products may contain bacteria. That’s why it is so important to follow safe handling and cooking instructions when serving turkey.”
